Fresh new analysis of what we’re experiencing
I had a blog post half written for my personal blog reviewing this book. (I received a complimentary copy from the publisher.) But the draft disappeared and I didn't have it in me to write the detailed post a second time. So, highlights.Bandy's book is really good. It is FULL of information on religious cultural profiles using portraiture work from Experian. I have used some of this portraiture work in my doctoral work and in the congregations I serve and it is really helpful. He paints pictures of 5 groups: the culturally ambivalent, the liberal cultural eclectic, the culturally righteous, the conservative cultural wedge, and the culturally passive, and describes each in great depth with attention to their connection to the church - the good and the bad and the in-between. All of this is excellent and insightful, even if it did also leave me wondering. I'm a pastor who puts myself in different cultural categories than I believe most of my congregants to be. Can we speak the same language to make an impact?I wish Bandy had included more synthesis of his material. He talks about the longing for hope among all these groups, but I don't feel like he offers a lot of direction for cultivating that hope. Perhaps that is simply not the task of this book, but I found myself wanting a clearer picture of hope for what to do in light of all this excellent work he shared.
