I picked up this book with two questions in mind --First, what to say to my child when they lose their game? Sharkie Zartman taught me how to approach this situation: You ask two questions, listen for the answers, and then make an observation.“Did you have fun?â€â€œDid you try your best?â€â€œWell then don’t be upset. Remember that you can’t do any better than your best, and it’s just a game.â€Second, what can a parent do to help prevent serious physical injury? Dr. Robert Weil taught me that proper rest and recovery are essential in all sports at all ages. The choice of the right shoes specific to the sport with the proper fit makes an important difference for growing feet. Check for wear patterns to make sure the shoe fits your child’s foot type and mechanics, as custom orthotics may be beneficial. Proper footwear can be a major help in the prevention of foot, ankle, lower leg, knee, hip, and back injuries. The book is divided into four sections: 1. Sports Parenting 101, 2. The Sports Doctor is In 3. The Experts Speak Out and 4. Parent Perspectives. I found this organization let me find the answers that I needed and then added additional insights. These experts clearly know their stuff and present their material in straightforward answers to frequently asked questions. There were answers to questions about youth sports safety, recognizing concussions, nutrition, and the challenge of drugs.Tip for Grandparents: When your grandchild starts sports, gift this book to their parents. It answers a wide range of questions that parents will have as their children learn the life lessons that sports have to teach.
Two experienced sports experts draw from over seventy years of experience of dealing with young athletes and their parents to bring us a comprehensive look into every concern a parent or young athlete could have concerning their sport. This book should be required reading for parents and athletes already involved in sports or just thinking about participating. Ms Zartman proposes questions and answers that any concerned parent may have regarding both youth and adolescent sports. Concerns such as training, coaching, motivation, cost of participation, time commitment and most important how to keep this experience FUN..Sharkie addresses our child's emotional, mental and physical safety while they are in the sports environment. The role of the parent is clearly defined. We are the support team. The do's and don'ts of HOW to provide support while not becoming a hindrance are enumerated and detailed. In Section Two Dr Weil presents suggestions on injury prevention and maximizing what the parent can do to listen and help his sports participant have a long , injury free and enjoyable career. Included are chapters on what YOU need to know about preventing common sports injuries (plantar fasciitis) , challenges of medication use, choosing proper shoe gear, foot mechanics and orthotics, involvement in one sport or more concurrently, universal exercises and collision sports concerns. The Final section is filled with the thoughts of world class experts on how to make your child's sport participation a rewarding experience and the lessons carried throughout life. This is a comprehensive and common sense approach to all the concerns we have as parents concerning our children's athletics. Paul Sheitel, DPM,FACFAS
An excellent well written book that equips the sport parent with so much knowledge! It covers everything from proper foot wear for the particular sport your child is in, the proper behavior for a parent who coaches his or her child, good nutrition and a chapter on drug usage. There's a section including advice from other well-known sports physicians and a section on real-life parent perspectives and experiences which is helpful. So if your child is starting out in sports, this is a 'must' read! I heartily recommend this book! You’ll be more confident - and so will your child!
This is the most comprehensive content I have seen for navigating all aspects of sports participation for parents and athletes, including nutrition, stress management and injury prevention. The mix of advice from the authors and experts provide insights and perspectives that will resonate with all readers. I have had the pleasure of working with Dr. Robert Weil for over 40 years and view him as the expert on foot and ankle health and injury prevention/rehabilitation. Many parents and athletes do not recognize the value of feet and ankle development and management to prevent injury no matter the sport. As a certified lymphologist and kinesiotherapist, I am happy to have this new resource to share with my clients to help them navigate their children through their sports participation.
#HeySportsParents is a must read for parents who have a child or children who play sports! It’s easy to lose your perspective when parenting an athlete, and this book covers many issues facing parents of youth athletes, while ensuring that sports still remain fun for kids. Parents will enjoy hearing the perspective of not only Sharkie Zartman, an outstanding athlete, coach and parent but also Dr Robert A. Weil, a sports podiatrist who has treated many of the world’s premier athletes. I highly recommend this book to teach you how to be a great sports parent while at the same time nurturing the success of your child and preventing sports injuries.
This book is a MUST HAVE for any parent that has a child in sports. It tells you what you need to know as a parent and child as far as injuries and things to watch for told by the innovators, doctors and sports experts. There is a treasure trove of information in this book! A great read for anyone connected with any sport.
Excellent; tells it like it is & emphasizes that the sport is for the child & important things for parents to read & consider.
