Author's Foreword: "Everyone who knows me will probably be surprised when this book appears. I have not worked in cosmonautics for more than ten years. I do not appear in 'sophisticated' circles, do not participate in conferences, and suddenly I have decided to share my reminiscences and ideas. I admit that the idea of writing a book developed only recently. It was a desire prompted undoubtedly by everything that is going on around us. I see how rapidly life is changing and how the interests of people, their psychology, reference points and goals are changing. What attracted us in youth has receded into the background and new beacons shine for modern youth. The world in which we grew up and worked no longer exists. Many opportunities have disappeared; new possibilities have replaced them which let people structure life in new ways. For the young, making the right choices under conditions of rapid and dramatic change is especially complicated. In this unstable time, I feel I must tell young people about our lives, about how we lived when there was much less freedom of choice. Opportunities for making one's life interesting always exist, and the more a person knows about other lives, the easier it is for him to structure his own. It was specifically this thought that induced me to write. I have been very fortunate. I witnessed and participated in works that laid the foundation for space exploration. I was involved in training youth. I observed the revolutionary transition from the regime of Party dictatorship to democracy. I decided to speak frankly about how all these processes affected me. Now most of the veils of secrecy have been lifted and we can tell more of the truth than we could before. This is not a book with a single story line. It is simply a collection of fragments of personal recollections which I tried to recount briefly so as not to bore the reader."
