Nina Simone probably won’t be a familiar name to primary graders, but that doesn’t matter much in this captivating book focusing on the young Nina and how early events in her life shaped her adult passions. This begins with Nina singing a lullaby she’s written to her daughter. At bedtime, she tells the child stories of her own youth. When she first saw a piano, she noticed the black keys were smaller than the white ones—and that could have become a metaphor for the world. “Black people were nothing but half notes on a huge ivory keyboard. But no. I did not agree with this.” Another incident, after she’s become an accomplished musician: at a concert, her mother is seated up-front until white audience members arrive. But Nina won’t play if her mother must move, so her mother stays put. Later, Martin Luther King becomes “her symphony.” But his dream must be nurtured, she murmurs as her daughter sleeps. This French import is strikingly illustrated in black-and-white. A two-page spread in which white people sit, while black people stand behind them, arms raised, conveys a historical drama made even more powerful by the medium. Nina Simone was a talented jazz musician, activist and rebel. Our 3 year old loves this book. He digs music, so reading about music is fun for him.
Love love love. First off it’s a picture book about Nina Simone! The art work is enchanting, expressive and inspiring. Beautifully done! Highly recommend
As a fan of Nina Simone, I was greatly disappointed in the inaccurate portrayal of this talented woman. As a musician, I was insulted by the author’s lack of musical knowledge. My only hope is that no one buys this thinking they will get any insight into the life of Nina Simone.
I recently received Nina: Jazz Legend and Civil-Rights Activist Nina Simone by Alice Brière-Haquet and illustrated by Bruno Liance. Charlesbridge Publishing sent me a copy for Multicultural Children's Book Day. The author tells a story of a young Nina who is a talented musician. Young Nina wonders about the racism and inequality that is so pervasive everywhere, even in music. She questions why the white keys on the piano are called whole notes and the black keys are half notes. Young Nina refused to give in on the notion that people of color are less than white people even though they were treated that way. She believed everyone was important. Much like the piano, you needed both black keys and white keys in order to create music. Even at a young age, Nina was strong and stood up to injustices. During a concert where she was set to perform, her mother was forced to give up her front row seat to a white person. Furious, Nina refused to perform unless her mother got her seat back.I was not aware who Nina Simone was and what a major musician and activist she was. After reading the picture book, I decided to learn more about Nina Simone. Simone was 12 when she had her debut and when she refused to perform unless her parents were given their front row seats back. This clearly shows how strong and determined she was. To be a child and to stand up to the adults and the injustice took so much courage. I can only imagine how proud her parents were of Simone, and not just of her musical talents but for her strength. My family and I read the book when we received it in the mail. Since today is Martin Luther King Jr's birthday, we decided to re-read the book in order to honor Dr. King and his work. This is a wonderful picture book to read with young children and to discuss the issues of racism, inequality, and our country's history relating to their treatment of black people.
This picture book is a completely engrossing look at the life of Nina Simone. Done in a way that welcomes even small children to hear her story, the book opens with a greeting and a lullaby. Using piano keys as an allegory for race, the book looks at the keys through the eyes of a young Nina, who notices that white keys are whole notes while black keys are half notes. She sees something similar in society as well. Nina used music as a way to unite and to protest. Inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr., her music spoke to people of all color and united them. While the story follows a linear path in time, the information shared focuses on important events in Nina’s life rather than feeling like a chronological list of accomplishments or dates. Instead readers get to see what influenced her and how she grew into her voice as an activist. The illustrations are particularly compelling. Done in black and white, the image of people who arranged as piano keys and the one of dandelion seeds floating downward are particularly compelling. Smart and beautifully designed. Appropriate for ages 4-7.
Although Nina is just a taste into who Nina Simone was as it only introduces her talent as a pianist and shares her beliefs in regards to civil rights. Set up as a lullaby that Nina is singing to her child, the story recounts her love of music and learning about the racism within our nation as well as a story where she stood up to inequality at one of her piano concerts. The lyrics and illustrations are dreamy and perfectly fit the purpose of the story: to introduce and intrigue the reader when it comes to Nina Simone.
For Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2018 Charlesbridge Publishing sent me the book Nina: Jazz Legend and Civil Rights Activist Nina Simone, The story is set as a lullaby Nina Simone is singing to her child. It takes us through her life as a musician who suffered the effects of racism on her life and career. My biggest criticism is the lack of examples of Nina Simone’s activism. With the exception of a event when Simone was twelve years old, the book does not give examples of Simone’s civil rights activism and resistance. The book is a great introduction to the life of an important historical figure. It takes children beyond heroes like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks and gives them examples of other African Americans luminaries. It is important that we have books in our classroom and home libraries which go beyond the better known African American heroes and this book does just that. It is a great book for discussions about racism and the challenges that people of color face everyday.
Remember Ebony and Ivory? Have you watched that music video recently? It hasn't aged well. Now if that song could be made into a wholly inaccurate children's book that doesn't do justice to one of the greatest musicians and heroines of the 20th century, it would be this book. The white keys are whole notes (it literally says that) and the black keys are half notes (that too), so black is only counted as half of white in this country. Isn't that clever? She's a civil rights icon because humans shouldn't have to be like the piano keys? UGH IT'S SO BAD.
