Robert Wachter is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Author of 250 articles, he coined the term “hospitalist†in 1996 and is generally considered the “father†of the hospitalist field, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. He is past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, past chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and a recipient of the Eisenberg Award, the nation’s top honor in patient safety. This is the best book I have read on health informatics. It is well written and entertaining to read with numerous real life examples and knowledge gained from speaking to many shareholders in this transformation of medicine. As a clinician with a Health Informatics degree, I found the author to be on target about the past, current and future directions of the interaction of medicine and technology.
As a nurse who started out in the pen and paper days of medical records and ended up working a dozen years in clinical informatics, I highly recommend The Digital Doctor for a very readable, realistic look at the positives and negatives of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). It is by far the best feedback I've encountered from a physician's perspective (am believe me plenty of physicians have offered feedback). I especially appreciate that his scope isn't limited to the physician's bubble - he is well-informed about the major impacts to nurses, pharmacists, patients and other health care players. While I know few clinicians who would want to go back to the pen and paper days, even fewer would argue that EHR’s have fully lived up to their potential. Dr. Wachter discusses his own experiences and interviews many of the top players in the field to explain why implementing an EHR is a lot more complicated than on-line banking, and other electronic systems He relates a harrowing example of a Septra overdose (38 1/2 pills), given despite a gauntlet of electronic alerts, that shows EHRs can create new types of errors. Finally, he recommends improvements and envisions where EHR’s may be headed in the future.

I enjoyed it immensely.
I am a practicing physician and medical software developer who has lived through the era described so eloquently in this excellent book! By far the best book that I've read about the transition from paper charts to digital medical records. Dr. Wachter writes with great wisdom and perspective about an extremely complicated but important aspect of moving our healthcare system from a fee-for-service environment to a quality-based system based on patient safety, outcomes and satisfaction. A must read for any physician or provider who wrestles with thoughtfully providing excellent medical care in the ever changing American healthcare system. Dr. Wachter is a gifted writer and thinker whose work has, and will, influence many thought leaders in our healthcare system. Read this book! And, I almost never say that.....
As a Family Practice Physician deeply concerned about the interposition of technology between my profession and the patients I care for, I found Robert Wachter's, "The Digital Doctor," highly informative and thought-provoking. We stand on the cusp of a new age in medicine, one that is both exciting and dangerous. Mr. Wachter did a fantastic job of showing both sides of this growing debate in a way that allowed the reader to develop their own bias and provided supporting evidence for each argument he discussed. This book is superbly written, engaging, and, if you buy the audio version, narrated. If you've noticed that your doctor spends more time data entry than they do listening to you, the book begins to explain why. As a fellow author, D.C. Lozar, I know how hard it is to keep an audience informed, engaged, and actively thinking and would happily recommend this book to anyone willing to learn something new while being entertained. Well done.
This book was one of the required readings text books for one of my classes to complete my Bachelors in Nursing. When working on your BSN and working full time as an RN it is rare that you have time to actually fully read a text book, it is most skimming. That being said, this is the first book that I have been required to read for a class that I read from cover to cover. It is mostly anecdotal and a very easy read. I found it very applicable to where we are in healthcare today with integrating technology. I specifically enjoyed the section regarding the governments role in helping initiate the integration of technology in healthcare. This is a good book for any healthcare professional to read, doctor or nurse alike.
As a HIM Committee chairman for a large foundation model clinic with 36 years of clinical experience I would consider this essential reading for anyone grappling with improving the EHR experience for physicians. For those of us who have been involved with computers and medicine for a long time you will find you probably have already identified most of the major issues but it is nice to see your opinions validated.. Nonetheless, Dr. Wachter still provides some new insights into many problems in a very readable fashion. There is no master "solution" offered, since solutions to these problems need to be customized to your organization and its' culture and work flows. I highly recommend this book. Make sure any administrators you work with in this areas reads this as well.
As a 40 year veteran of surgical practice, this book really filled in the blanks about how the digital revolution in health care evolved and how the EMR mandate was politically accomplished. A worthy read for any medical professional or interested citizen who asks "how did we end up here?"Very well researched and documented.
