I bought this with a very specific purpose: to read to my 4 year old son.There are no good Tolkien books (or books based on Tolkien's stories) for preschoolers. My son is still young enough to need pictures in a book, but I wanted to start him on Tolkien!First, we loved the illustrations. The larger pictures show the story of Bilbo traveling into the West. The smaller pictures at the bottom show the story of The Hobbit. I was able to tell my son about The Hobbit easily and in context; he loved it!Second, the poem isn't Tolkien's best, but that's okay. I wish there was a book like this for some of the verses of "Roads Go Ever On and On." Still, most of the rhythm is good.Third, we spent more time talking about the pictures and the text than reading the text. I encouraged that - I want him to engage with books, not just consume.Perhaps the best praise I can give is that my son begged to read it a second time immediately. He wanted to talk about every picture on every page, and he soaked it all in as only a child can.
This is pure Tolkien joy and added delight for friend and illustrator Pauline Baynes' to boot. Don't let comments about the shortness of the poem or the size of the book dissuade you. Contained in this small gem is a lovely poem, beautiful adorned with evocative, colourful drawings, giving devotees of Middle Earth a few final, precious moments with our dear friend Bilbo. I believe our sleepy and greatly aged Bilbo offered these last lines of farewell and longing to us as a gift of comfort and encouragement for our own journeys. I would love to have a print of the back cover illustration (the three hobbits looking across the sea to the west) hanging on my wall. "Ship, my ship! I seek the West, and fields and mountains ever blest."I have this in both hard copy and on my Kindle Fire. Both are wonderful. Advantage in the electronic copy is that you can enlarge the drawings to see more detail to get an even greater appreciation of Baynes' talent. Buy this for your Middle Earth inhabitant, they'll love it!
Just a few lines of verse, but they are well worth it--worthy of memorization as personal proverbs or meditations. It's a wonderful add-on to The Lord of the Rings, and it stirs the imagination and conjures pictures of an old hobbit on a grey ship looking with emotion across the sea in both directions, behind and ahead, as he remembers the world he is leaving behind and looking ahead to his new destination. The art that goes with it, of course, makes it worth the price.
Although Tolkien's work here has been printed before, a few times, the real star is always the art. This was just one of many songs for Tolkien, and gets to stand on its own feet thanks to this imagery.Pauline Baynes' work stays great today, and are printed in really high quality in this book. I got this for my nephew to try to read as he is learning; hopefully, I can get him hooked and reading the Silmarillion, before too long! Maybe in a few years, or ten, we'll see.
I don't know if this is considered a collector's book or not. This is a child's book. Not for anybody over maybe 6-7 years old. Not only that I paid more than the original price for the book !!! In my eyes a waste of money. I should have read the reviews before I bought it.
Though this little book was shorter and simpler than I expected, the combination of poetic verses and artwork was evocative, and charming. Definitely better for fans of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Someone who had encountered neither might not understand the appeal of this book.
Really just an illustrated poem, but a delightful read. The illustrations are lovely and if viewed through the quill of Mr. Bilbo Baggins, one can imagine the old hobbit penning this on his last journey down to the Grey Havens. If you enjoyed the long goodbyes and repeated farewells at the end of The Lord of the Rings, this little poem book is a treat.
A final but of poetry to end the third age of middle earth. Night written and illustrated. A good addition to my Tolkien library.
